Hanoi Railway Coffee: The Train Street

Experience the thrill of sipping coffee just centimeters away from a passing train. Discover the unique charm and vibrant life of Hanoi's most famous and adventurous coffee street.

A. Overview

Hanoi Railway Coffee (also known as the “Train Street”) is one of the most unique and exciting spots in the capital. Here, small coffee shops are built right next to the active train tracks that cut through a narrow residential alley. Sitting on a small stool and feeling the wind as a massive train passes by just gang-distance away is a “must-do” adventure for anyone visiting Hanoi.

B. Price & Services

  • Entrance Fee: Free (However, you must be escorted by a coffee shop owner to enter the railway area for safety).
  • Drinks: 30,000 - 70,000 VND (Includes coffee, tea, and local fruit juices).
  • Train Schedule: Trains usually pass on weekday evenings and multiple times during weekends. The schedule changes frequently.
  • Last Update: May 13, 2026

C. Useful Tips

  • Safety First: This is an active railway. Always follow the instructions of the shop owners. Stay behind the yellow safety lines and do not try to take photos on the track when the train is coming.
  • Escort System: Due to safety regulations, police often block the entrance. The easiest way to get in is to have a shop owner “invite” you in. They are very friendly and will guide you to a safe seat.
  • The Best Spot: The section near Phung Hung street is usually more organized and offers great views of the train coming through the narrow canyon of houses.
  • Timing: Check the schedule in advance! If there is no train, the street is still very beautiful for photos with its colorful cafes and local life.

D. VnToYou Advice

“For our groups, we always suggest visiting the Railway Coffee in the late afternoon. It’s the perfect time to grab a ‘Salt Coffee’ (a Hanoi specialty) and wait for the train as the lights of the cafes turn on. VnToYou guides have direct contact with the shop owners to ensure our guests always have the best and safest seats reserved. It is an unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the adventurous spirit of Hanoi.”
