Mua Cave Viewpoint: The Dragon of Ninh Binh

Climb the 500 stone steps of Mua Cave to reach the summit of Lying Dragon Mountain. Enjoy the most breathtaking panoramic view of Ninh Binh, featuring the Tam Coc valley and winding Ngo Dong River.

Overview

Mua Cave (Hang Múa) is often called the “Great Wall of Vietnam” or the “Muse of Ninh Binh.” Located at the foot of Lying Dragon Mountain (Nui Ngoa Long), it is famous not for the cave itself, but for the 500-step climb to its twin peaks. From the summit, you are rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree view of the Tam Coc landscape, lush rice paddies, and the dramatic limestone karsts that Ninh Binh is famous for.

Useful Tips

Last Updated: May 2026

Safety Note: The stone steps are steep and uneven. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and climb slowly.

  • Best Time to Visit: Sunrise (05:30 AM) or Sunset (05:00 PM) offers the most magical light and avoids the midday heat.
  • Rice Season: To see the “Golden Harvest” view of Tam Coc, visit in late May or early June.
  • Hydration: Bring a bottle of water with you for the climb. There are small vendors at the bottom, but prices are higher at the top.
  • Dress Code: Wear comfortable hiking clothes. While there is no strict religious dress code, be mindful that it is a physical climb and the summit can be windy.

VnToYou Advice

“For the best photos, head to the peak with the Stone Dragon. However, the second peak with the pagoda also offers a stunning view and is usually less crowded. If you want to beat the large tour buses from Hanoi, try to arrive at Mua Cave before 09:00 AM. After the climb, treat yourself to a cold coconut at the lotus pond located at the entrance—it’s the perfect way to recover!”
